White Otter Castle - North Western Ontario

Once again, Canoe Canada was our outfitter for a return journey to the White Otter Castle. We base camped at the north end of Big Island and paddled empty to the castle the next morning.
It was a great trip with a wide range of weather. The students, mostly unknown to each other prior to the trip surely learned about their classmates on this trip! All those who took part in the trip should be very proud of their accomplishment.

Again, Canoe Canada was our outfitter for a return journey to the White Otter Castle. The weather for one whole day was glorious: maybe it was too glorious as it was very hot. We reached the Castle after a full day and set up camp in a big stand of huge red pines. That night we were "treated" to a spectacular lightning show and a torrential downpour. A lot of tents had little rivers running through them.
The return part of the trip was somewhat wet. However we pushed through to the end in one very full day and were fortunate enough to be able to spend the last night in Canoe Canada's bunkhouse. Nobody really wanted to make camp in the rain and then sleep in wet gear.

We arrived at Canoe Canada Outfitters, our outfitter in Atikokan, on 06 Septemer and loaded our gear. Our 1st year student's brigade started near the south end of White Otter Lake. Our destination was the famous White Otter Castle built by Jimmy McQuait in the early 1900's. We experienced a wide range of weather conditions, particularly following winds. We were even windbound at the White Otter Castle for a few hours. We were stuck on the highway on the return journey due to a fire in a tractor-trailer. All those who took part in the trip should be proud of their accomplishment.
Lake Superior - North Shore Canoeing
During the last two weeks of May, faculty member Rod had the opportunity to paddle the north shore of Lake Superior with some Lakehead University Outdoor Recreation students. It was a great trip, but it was often really cold. My thanks to Professor Darrell Makin for asking me if I'd like to participate!
